Is eating insects just another fad diet?

Is eating insects just another fad diet? This is a question that I was asked by a good friend when I told her about our plans to start a food business that sold insect-based foods. It was a question that I had asked myself at one point during the early days when we were exploring the idea. So my answer to this question is No.  Eating insects and incorporating insects into your daily diet isn’t just another trendy weight loss diet that will fizzle out. It has a lot more to offer than that!

Insects are highly nutritious and are packed full of protein. You could use insects to help aid you with weight loss, you are in control of why you eat them. But for me it is about having another option, an option which could allow you to adapt your daily diet which will benefit you and the planet.

We have introduced crickets into our diet on a daily basis, adding our flour to cooking sauces such as curries and bolognaise. I then reduce the amount of mince or chicken and pack it full of veg.

Delicious.

What, you still eat meat? Yes, of course. I enjoy eating meat and we will continue to do so. Crickets or other insects will not replace what meat I eat, it will purely replace the amount of traditional meat I consume. It also means that my meals are more fulfilling, and I feel satisfied for a lot longer after I have eaten. I will eat flavoured crickets as a snack instead of eating my previous go to high sugar snacks. Now I feel like I’m not having to constantly battle with craving, and as a result I have lost weight, not because it’s a fad diet but because it just cuts the amount of naughty, sugary foods I am eating! The cricket powder has really helped me curbs those cravings and the desire to eat sugar or high carb foods.
